Milei government stated on Thursday evening that the Senate’s rejection of Decree 70/2023 “threatens” the formalization of the Pact of May, a proposal of agreement for different political sectors that the President announced on March 1, in his speech to Congress.
A statement published by the President’s office says that the Senate’s rejection can be interpreted as an “attempt to undermine the change that Argentines voted for”.
“On March 1 2024, the President, in an unprecedented historical action, offered an invitation to all political leaders, regardless of their political affiliation, to sign the Pact of May. This pact is a foundational agreement that seeks to establish ten State policies to build a new economic order”, the statement reads.
President Milei said that the Pact of May is an attempt to “rescue Argentina from the path of failure and put it back on the right path, to be a world power again”.
“This agreement, which has been demanded by politicians for decades but nobody had dared to do it before, requires the good will of all sectors of Argentine politics”, the text adds.
In this sense, the statement says that “what happened today at the National Senate threatens the President’s proposal”.
“The same Chamber that has approved almost 500 Kirchnerist decrees, has rejected President Javier Milei’s decree, just 3 months after his inauguration”.
For the government, “it is impossible to interpret this decision in any way other than as an attempt to undermine the Pact of May, the national government and the change that Argentines voted for”.
“In his speech about the state of the Nation, the President offered two options: agreement or confrontation. The time has come for political leaders to decide on which side of history they are going to stand”, the statement concluded.
