The American Association of Jurists (AAJ) denounced Javier Milei’s government for violations of “the democratic system, human rights and development” before the 55th ordinary session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, and alerted on the attempt to shut down Télam and other public organizations.
“Since December 2023, Javier Milei’s administration in Argentina has put into practice a series of policies that contradict fundamental rights established in the country’s Constitution, as well as human rights and rights to sustainable development”, said the AAJ’s report.
In that sense, the AAJ pointed out that the means that “the Argentine government is using are unacceptable, because they entail serious violations to the established judicial procedures and, above all, they are incompatible with the democratic system”.

“On December 12 2023, the government announced new policies and economic packages, including a 118% devaluation of the national currency that made prices soar. Then, a repressive protocol against social protest was imposed along with fines for demonstrators and organizations that summon people to protest. There were violent arbitrary arrests and use of chemical weapons”, detailed the AAJ.
Also, the AAJ underlined that the 70/2023 Decree signed by President Milei “deregulates the social and economic order in matters of supply, prices, trade, mining, lands in foreign hands and health care”.
The decree “eliminated labor rights, environmental laws and regulations that prevented the privatization of State companies in order to give strategic Argentine resources to corporations. There has also been massive layoffs and elimination of social aid programs. It eliminated the Ministry of Women, Gender and Diversity, Télam news agency and the National Institute against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism (INADI)”, reads the text that accuses the Milei administration of “violation of the right to development”.
In today’s session, where representatives of every UN member state were present along with NGOs, the AAJ presented a video in which Jurist Claudia Rocca explained the foundations of the report.
We included the government’s attempt to shut down Télam because we believe that it goes against the right to public information”
CLAUDIA ROCCA, JURIST
“We included the government’s attempt to shut down Télam because we believe that it goes against the right to public information”, said Rocca in conversation with Somos Télam.
Also, in her presentation, the AAJ emphasized that the Argentine government “threatens and accuses legislators, taking away joint participation funds”.
“In three months, there are 3,6 million new poor, millions of people in need of food assistance, without access to medicines, health care, housing or public services. With consumption at a halt, industrial production dropping and the loss of employment, the worsening of the social crisis is inevitable”, says the report.
The UN Human Rights Council accepted to analyze the AAJ’s report, which could result in a UN Special Rapporteur studying the case of Télam in relation to violation of the Right to Information.
